Ghost Towns of Banff and the Bow Valley - Digital Edition
I've been creating zines in the Ghost Towns of Alberta series to show the historical rise and fall of once-prosperous communities throughout the province of Alberta, along with illustrations and even a map you can use to plan your own adventure to see these gems of history.
This zine focuses on communities in Banff and the Bow Valley, a region that holds unique historic gems and lessons about the oft-broken balance between nature, industry, and people. From the birth of Canada’s first national park through dispossession of Indigenous lands, a frenzied rise and fall of prosperous coal mining towns, and three eras of internment and exploited labour, as well as other unique and strange finds, this area has a lot to teach us about today through the lens of the past.
The first in this series of zines, Ghost Towns of Southern Alberta Along the Historic Red Coat Trail, was shortlisted for a 2023 Broken Pencil Magazine Zine Award for the category "Best Info Zine".
This is the digital version of the zine, in PDF format. This format also includes the artwork featured on the front of the envelope packaging of the physical edition of the zine.
