This bundle contains...
Bundle together the second set of three zines in my Ghost Towns of Alberta series and get both the physical and digital versions!
I've been creating zines in the Ghost Towns of Alberta series to show the historical rise and fall of once-prosperous communities throughout the province of Alberta, along with illustrations and even a map you can use to plan your own adventure to see these gems of history.
This collection brings together the second set of three zines created in 2024:
-
Ghost Towns of the Alberta Midlands
This zine focuses on communities originally served by the Alberta Midland Railway, a company whose origin feels an awful lot like a grift by the proprietors of the Canadian Northern Railway... but nonetheless served this area, the Drumheller Valley, and beyond. -
Ghost Towns of Easter Alberta
This zine focuses on communities in East-Central Alberta where the settlement of Alberta was fueled by rail expansion and a regimented set of measurements and rigidly-planned communities meant to funnel people and trade (and dollars) towards the rail lines. As part of the history, I explore and explain just how early ideas of rail expansion in order to colonize the West purposely included the cookie-cutter setup of where towns were made and what they looked like. -
Ghost Towns of Banff and the Bow Valley
This zine focuses on communities in Banff and the Bow Valley, a region that holds unique historic gems and lessons about the oft-broken balance between nature, industry, and people. From the birth of Canada’s first national park through dispossession of Indigenous lands, a frenzied rise and fall of prosperous coal mining towns, and three eras of internment and exploited labour, as well as other unique and strange finds, this area has a lot to teach us about today through the lens of the past.
